John Leebold began practicing Iyengar yoga in 1973 following the courses in Light on Yoga on the NSW North Coast before Iyengar Yoga schools existed in Australia. John was first taught by Guruji in Pune in 1977, during a two year overland journey through South East Asia, India, Russia, Europe and North Africa.
John’s first formal yoga classes were in London with Guruji's first certified teachers. Returning to Sydney, he did classes and teacher development with Martyn Jackson from 1978 through to 1982 whilst studying Osteopathy and statutory registering in 1983. This was the time of Guruji’s first visit to Australia.
John was one of the 13 foundation teachers certified by Guruji at the outset of the Australian BKS Iyengar Yoga Association in 1985.
John established yoga classes and Osteopathic practice in Sydney before moving to Perth to open the Western Australian School of Yoga in Perth in 1986 and Fremantle Yoga Studio in 1991 whilst raising four children. At this time he also taught annual workshops in the USA, Bali, and New Zealand.
John has attended many Intensives with Guruji, BKS Iyengar, in Pune India including Backbend Intensive in 1991, Pranayama course in 1995, Jubilee teachers Intensive 2000. He has assisted Guruji and Geetaji both in Pune and on their tours in Australia, New Zealand and in China in 2011 in Guangzhou sponsored for the 60 year SinoIndian Co-Operation Agreement Committee Celebrations.
John began running teacher development from 1988 until Covid. And since 2008 he has been running teacher development in over 10 cities in China .John now resides in Perth, Western Australia.
John holds an Advanced Certificate issued from The Ramani Iyengar Yoga Institute. Pune, India.
