BIOGRAPHY:
Kate has 20+ years of experience in founding and managing both for-profit businesses and nonprofit organizations. She has been responsible for every aspect of an organization’s operations: business development and strategy; programs; finance and fundraising; human resources; public relations and marketing; and board governance. She is currently a business consultant, supporting both small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
As Founder and start-up Executive Director for Common Ground Healing Arts, a 501c3 nonprofit, Kate envisioned, operationalized, and managed an organization with a mission to make healing arts practices such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and massage accessible to all. As Director of the Guerrilla Yoga Project, she created a network of yoga teachers that brought yoga to churches, community centers, public housing projects, and prisons. With the guidance of experienced mentors, the support of community partners, and a talented staff and volunteer team of 90+ people, Kate led a grassroots effort that has improved the health and wellness of over 10K individuals in Central Virginia in the past 10 years.
Kate has also been a yoga teacher since 2003, and Co-Directed a Yoga Alliance-certified teacher training program for 5 years. In January 2023, she will receive a Certificate in Social Justice from Harvard University’s Extension School. She is eternally grateful for the teachings of Kofi Busia, her primary yoga teacher.

Description:
“Yoga is skill in action.†- The Bhagavad Gita
Most of us are familiar with the concept of karma yoga, and as dedicated practitioners of yoga, many of us are drawn to serve. But how do we take a vision of service–whether that’s for a donation-based yoga studio we’d like to start up, or a nonprofit organization we want to create–and turn it into a reality?
Join Kate for a practical discussion of how to manifest your ideas, and how to thread the philosophy of yoga into the way you do business. You’ll learn about critical aspects of starting up your own organization, such as developing programs, managing human resources, fundraising, financials, marketing, community outreach, and more. Participants will be encouraged, but not required, to share their specific ideas and receive feedback. There will be time for Q&A.
