BIOGRAPHY: Keiko Okuno

Keiko Okuno is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher based in Tokyo, Japan. Keiko has been teaching yoga for over 16 years. She began practicing Iyengar Yoga in 2006 in Los Angeles with Marla Apt and Lisa Walford. She spent three years apprenticing with Marla. Keiko still remembers her first class with Marla, where Marla explained about the soles of the feet and skin orientation. Amazed at the detailed instruction and the benefits, Keiko was immediately drawn to the precision of Iyengar Yoga. Keiko continues to practice and teach vigorously in Tokyo. In her teaching, Keiko strives to be challenging yet compassionate. She loves to help students observe themselves and discover their own potential.

"Do not look at other's bodies with envy or with superiority.
All people are born with different constitutions.
Never compare with others.
Each one's capacities are a function of his or her ineternal strength.
Know your capacities and continually improve upon them."
ーB.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

List of Keiko’s Sessions

Title:

Maricyasana 1 - Forward Extension, Rotation, and Body Knotting

Type:

Sat Brahma Middling

Length:

1.0 hour(s)

Description:

Our practice matures in many different ways. By focusing on simpler poses, we can develop more refined actions.

In this session, we will focus on the three actions of Maricyasana 1. Maricyasana 1 is considered one of the basic forward extensions. Maricyasana 1 is also a rotation (open twist)  and the beginning of body knotting as we bind our arms around one leg. Exploring each action of Maricyasana 1 and enhancing each movement will lead to a deeper understanding of the qualities of forward extension. Understanding the basic actions of the pose will lead us to a deeper and safer practice when attempting more advanced poses.
