In the century since Swami Vivekananda introduced the USA to yoga, its practice has spread in ways that might tickle but not really surprise the great Ramakrishna monk. From the wisdom of ancient sages to the nearly aerobic classes being taught in gyms and studios across America, what has changed—and how can we safely and intelligently hone our focus on what is the same?
In this 90-minute inquiry into how and why we practice, we'll explore asanas and sequences tradition by tradition, accompanied by readings and lessons from masters of each lineage—Sivananda to Integral, Viniyoga to Iyengar, Bikram to “Hot,†Ashtanga Vinyasa to “Power Yogaâ€â€”to ensure conscious connection with whatever style of yoga you choose to follow.
American Yoga author Carrie Schneider teaches challenging classes aimed at alignment with the only yoga there ever was.
