BIOGRAPHY:

Carrie SchneiderCarrie Schneider’s instruction taps our vantage as 21st century yogins: fed but unlimited by the myriad of traditions through salutations and held alignments that show us what we are. Her 2003 book, American Yoga has framed the inquiry.

After completing OM Yoga’s initial teaching training in 1998, Carrie undertook certification intensives with Richard Freeman and David Life. Ensuing study with Ramanand Patel and with Kofi Busia, whose teacher training she attended in 2013, were—and remain—game-changers, as was a 2012 course with Rajiv and Swati Chanchani in Rajpur, India. Carrie was additionally certified by her longtime teachers Rodney and Colleen Saidman Yee in 2016.

Carrie’s first book, Yoga Within was published in 2001. She lives and teaches in New York City, and on the World Wide Web.

Title:

What Kind of Yoga Do You Do?

Type:

[A] On The Mat / Asana Class

Level:

All Levels

Length:

1.5 hour(s)

Description:

In the century since Swami Vivekananda introduced the USA to yoga, its practice has spread in ways that might tickle but not really surprise the great Ramakrishna monk. From the wisdom of ancient sages to the nearly aerobic classes being taught in gyms and studios across America, what has changed—and how can we safely and intelligently hone our focus on what is the same?
In this 90-minute inquiry into how and why we practice, we'll explore asanas and sequences tradition by tradition, accompanied by readings and lessons from masters of each lineage—Sivananda to Integral, Viniyoga to Iyengar, Bikram to “Hot,” Ashtanga Vinyasa to “Power Yoga”—to ensure conscious connection with whatever style of yoga you choose to follow.

American Yoga author Carrie Schneider teaches challenging classes aimed at alignment with the only yoga there ever was. Her instruction is informed by her longtime practice and study with masters like Kofi Busia, Bharati, Ramanand Patel, Swami Dayananda and Richard Freeman. She was initially certified at OM Yoga Center in 1998, and her first book, Yoga Within, was published in 2001. www.carrieyoga.com
