BIOGRAPHY: Maxine Tobias

Maxine Tobias is an internationally renowed yoga teacher and therapist. Coming from a background in movement and dance, she brought her considerable skills to the study of yoga and in 1968 became a devoted student of Yogagharya BKS Iyengar. She travelled many times to India to work with BKS Iyengar, and received her Advanced Certification directly from him, one of the earliest he ever awarded, in the early 1970s.

Maxine has now been teaching yoga for over fifty years, focussing on precision, concentration, detail, body alignment and mental clarity. She shows that yoga is not merely an incredibly powerful system of body movement, but that it primarily awakens the inner potential of human creative energy, allowing its external expression. She teaches that though our brain identifies us as matter—arms, legs, noses and the like—we exist rather in every cell of our body as energy; and therefore in the words of Deepak Chopra “…the field of human life is open and unbounded. At the deepest level your body is ageless, your mind timeless”.

Maxine’s recent passion is to study the connections between biological cell medicine and cell yoga as anti-aging protocol. As co-creator and co-director of Quantum Wellness, now in its 14th year, she has helped devise and refine their programme. This includes yoga, nutrition, biological therapies (hormones, infusions, diet and nutrition) and cosmetic regeneration.

Maxine is the author of three aclaimed books in yoga: Stretch and Relax (Dorling Kindersley1984), and Complete Stretching (Knopf;1992) have both been world best sellers. Her video Basic Yoga, Carlton 1995, is available on PAL only. She has also just published her first work of fiction: The Book of Transformations.
