BIOGRAPHY: Jayne OrtonJayne Orton with BKS Iyengar

I started practising Iyengar Yoga as a teenager in the 1970s and in fact my first Iyengar teacher was Kofi Busia! I then met BKS Iyengar in a Master Class in Oxford sometime later, an event that completely transformed my whole being and life thereafter and I vowed to dedicate my life to this man's teachings.

Shortly after, I started to train as a teacher under the watchful eye of Jeanne Maslen, another extraordinary teacher, from Manchester. How lucky have I been!?

I started teaching in Birmingham, my hometown, in 1980 and have continued to do so ever since.

I opened the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Birmingham UK in 2002 with Guruji’s blessings.

I have visited RIMYI in Pune over 20 times during the last 3 decades. I have taught many workshops in UK, Europe and North America and also have a special interest in Yoga for Sports. I have been a long time teacher at Birmingham City Football Club and deal with injury prevention for footballers. It will come as no surprise then that apart from Yoga and Indian Philosophy I am a keen football fan! I love reading and writing, poetry, and walking my beloved Jack Russell 'Sparky'!

Description:

When we practice Asana we set the outer frame first,we  learn the pose but then by  paying careful attention, using the intelligence of the body as well as the mind we learn to do the Asanas from the inner most core of our being which BKS Iyengar called 'Dynamic Extension'.   In this session we will work on making familar poses more dynamic and wholistic by careful attention to detail.  The session will include Asanas from many different groups: standings, seated, twistings, inversions etc.

Think Light - Feel Light!

Description:

BKS Iyengar always said a feeling of 'lightness'(and not heaviness or dullness)  in our practice is to be aimed at.  But also our own mind set often can change the feel and experience of our practice to give a feeling of lightness. The practice affects the mind and the mind affects the practice! This will be a dynamic session of Iyengar Yoga including working up to including  wrist balances and inversions and some abdominal work..... where the feeling of lightness in the body and mind can be experienced.
