BIOGRAPHY: Justin Herold

JUSTIN HEROLD was a runner who ran for the health benefits it provided. In 1979 to overcome nagging running injuries he started practicing yoga. He slowly discovered that the yoga practice provided the most complete, safest system for keeping healthy. Health benefits were what drew him to running initially.

His first yoga teacher was rooted in Iyengar Yoga and he settled on that systems after testing the waters of several others. He landed at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Los Angeles (IYILA) in the mid 80’s and began trading his construction skills for classes … ultimately teaching there from 1989 through 1992. After taking two months of classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in 1989, he returned home and became a certified teacher and taught at IYILA until the end of 1992. He was also on the Board of Directors and part of the Administrative Management Team at the institute during the same period.

Justin has had the good fortune to study will all three of the Iyengars, B.K.S., Geeta and Prashant. His first two-month trip to India was in 1989 during which time he had regular classes with B.K.S. Since 1989 he has returned to Pune on a regular basis to continue his studies with the Iyengar family. His most recent visit there was in 2019.

In 1992 Justin relocated to Bangkok, Thailand where he began teaching yoga full time. His first several years of classes were done privately and in many of the local health clubs.

He founded the Iyengar Yoga Studio, Bangkok and opened it with the blessings and encouragement of his guru B.K.S. Iyengar, conducting the first class on October 26, 1999. Regular classes have been held thre ever since.

In 2008 again with the encouragement and guidance of Guruji, Justin started to prepare students to bring Iyengar Yoga to the community of Thailand. There are now several Thai Iyengar teachers spreading the word.

Justin is part of the assessment team of the southeast Asia region. The team helps to guide, prepare and judge the readiness of the upcoming Iyengar teachers for the region.

Since moving to Thailand, Justin has regularly conducted workshops throughout the region. He has taught in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Taiwan and China.

List of Justin’s Sessions

Title:

Simplifying Our Approach To Practice (1)

Type:

Sat Brahma Mild

Length:

2.0 hour(s)

Description:

The three Sessions I will teach (this is the first) will introduce fundamental ways on which to build a practice. We will look at how all the asanas are alike in their practice.  How to view and thereby create a foundation for their practice.

These are simple concepts that are not so simple in the doing … until we embrace the “mindful” element, and how this can take us beyond just memorizing steps and moving, to learning to adapt the practice to the uniqueness of our own bodies.

We will view the classical asana and the logic for adapting props in a way that should also be helpful to even the most well-seasoned practitioners.

Notes:

This set of three Sessions will build from one to the next, so you will probably get the most benefit by joining all three.  But it will still be OK to take only one or two.

Each 90-minute practice in each Session will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions and gain advice on how to structure a home practice.
