Maxine Tobias is an internationally renowed yoga teacher and therapist. Coming from a background in movement and dance, she brought her considerable skills to the study of yoga and in 1968 became a devoted student of Yogagharya BKS Iyengar. She travelled many times to India to work with BKS Iyengar, and received her Advanced Certification directly from him, one of the earliest he ever awarded, in the early 1970s.

In 1976, she met B.K.S Iyengar and was immediately struck by his light, energy, insight, and genius, as well as by his joy in yoga and delightful humor. Joan began her yoga training in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1968. In a 1972 horseback riding accident she broke her back and sustained other serious spinal injuries. She suffered from temporary paralysis and slowly began to recover by doing some yoga poses. Joan participated in a 1973 class in Ann Arbor taught by B.K.S, Iyengar .Watching her closely, he advised her what to do and what not to do.
