BIOGRAPHY: Sheila HaswellI have been practicing Iyengar Yoga for almost 50 years and teaching for nearly 43 years. I qualified as a Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher (now called Level 3) in 2000 and I have given most of my working life to studying and teaching, mostly here in the UK but also across Europe.

I began my yoga experience in 1974 whilst at university. My mum, Lilian Biggs (also my teacher until her death in 2005) sent me a copy of 'Light on Yoga' by BKS Iyengar She had just come across this style of yoga and was sure I would be interested. As a recently retired national gymnast I was eager for some routine and training in my daily life and I was fascinated by all the photos. I got right in there and started my practice with just this book and the photos of Guruji to guide me. It was about two years before I found a regular class to attend, but the seed was sown deep and I have continued to be involved with Iyengar yoga which has become a part of who I am.

Sheila Haswell I qualified to teach initially in 1980 but then went on to have my family of three children. I have taught without a break since 1987 when the youngest was 1 year old.

My teachers were both my mum, Lilian, and later her best friend in yoga Jeanne Maslen. It was these two amazing women who encouraged me to take further certificates and to get more involved in the Iyengar Yoga Association here in the UK. I have been on several committees, trained as an assessor, a trainer and a moderator and for several years organised the Introductory assessments for the country. I have served on the board for IY(UK) and am currently the chair for the therapy committee.

Lilian & Jeanne had travelled to Pune regularly since the mid-seventies and brought back the direct teachings of Guruji. It wasn't until the early nineties that I got to travel to RIMYI, because of family commitments and finances. When I did get to be in front of Guruji and Geetaji I realised that my teachers had brought back the genuine teachings and I felt well prepared for what was given in that first intensive - I didn't say it was easy but then I knew it was going to be hard work.

I run a Yoga Shala in High Wycombe, near London and that keeps me very busy. www.iyengar-yoga-shala.co.uk

List of Sheila’s Sessions

Title:

Know Your Legs for Forward Extensions

Type:

Sat Visnu Mild

Length:

2.0 hour(s)

Description:

Your legs are organs of action which should support and lift you as you move around.
Correct actions of these limbs can protect your spine and support your internal organs.
In this session we will look at the input of your legs for better and safer forward extensions.

Notes:

Props required:
Blankets; 2 wooden blocks; 2 belts; your usual Sarvangasana supports

Title:

Towards inversion practice

Type:

Sat Visnu Middling

Length:

2.0 hour(s)

Description:

Just being upside down is not enough. How we get there, how we stay, how we come down all have to be explored.

This session is built from teachings of both BKS Iyengar and Geeta S Iyengar for improvement and understanding of these important asanas.

Notes:

This is not a session for those who have yet to be taught Sirsasana

It is for those who have already learnt to invert, and who now want to explore further.

For this session it will be best if you have access to a wall and a chair. You will also need your usual Sarvangasana supports.
